Then she said something that really surprised Edward. Did she just say she needed me? he thought. He slowly walked towards her and lifted an arm to hold her, but it dropped. He didn't know what to say. If he said what he wanted to, he would be saying the wrong thing. If he said the right thing, his venomous heart would only be shattered into smaller pieces.
He inhaled, taking in her floral scent, looking at the ground. He knew he was just hurting Bella even more by keeping quiet. He could imagine the thoughts that he died to hear in her private mind, and cringed at all of them. Screw it.
