Memory: While dying of the Spanish influenza in 1918, Edward's doctor (Carlisle Cullen) changed him into a vampire, partially due to his mother's wish for Carlisle to do whatever he could to keep Edward alive. Carlisle believed that Edward's mother could sense what he was and do what others could not and Carlisle did so. As a vampire, Edward attained the ability to read people's minds. But, merely ten years after becoming a vampire, Edward rebelled against Carlisle's way of life and went in search of human's blood instead of animal's. Eventually guilt-ridden and coming to a realization that Carlisle was right, Edward came back. He hasn't left the family since.
